Govt grants exequatur to new Swedish consul

The government yesterday presented an exequatur to the Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Sweden to the Lao PDR at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vientiane.

The exequatur for the new Swedish consul Mr Mats Peter Fogde was handed over by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Sengphet Houngboungnuang on behalf of the Lao government.

Mr Fogde replaces Mr Jan Caderwall, the former Honorary Consul who completed his mission to Laos at the end 2015.

Mr Sengphet said he highly appreciated the appointment of Mr Fogde as Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Sweden to the Lao PDR, adding it would enhance the traditional relationship between Sweden and the Lao PDR in terms of economics, trade and tourism as well as education and socio-cultural affairs.

Mr Sengphet said he was confident that Mr Fogde would meet with great success in his work and would refresh and strengthen the cooperation between the two countries for the future benefit of both sides and their people.

The Lao PDR and the Kingdom of Sweden established diplomatic relations on October 10, 1964.

Laos has diplomatic ties with 139 countries today, compared to 131 countries in 2011. Of these, 24 countries have set up embassies in Vientiane and four have consulates in the Lao capital.

Laos has 39 embassies, three representative offices, nine general consulates, one consular office and 17 honorary consulates abroad.
